The Veterans Administration offers Aid and Attendance as part of an "Improved Pension" Benefit that is largely unknown. This benefit allows for Veterans and surviving spouses who require the regular attendance of another person to assist them in the daily activities of livings. Assistance such as; eating, bathing, dressing, medication maintenance, or personal hygiene issues and to receive additional monthly benefits for this assistance.

This most important benefit is overlooked by many families with Veterans or surviving spouses who need additional monies to help care for ailing parents or loved ones. This is a "Pension Benefit" and IS NOT dependent upon service-related injuries for compensation. This benefit is paid directly to the veteran or surviving spouse and can be used to help pay for care in the home, Nursing Home or Assisted Living facility.

Qualification Requirements

The Veteran must have been on active duty for at least 90 days and must have served at least one day of active duty during a defined wartime period, but combat duty is not a requirement.

World War II

December 7, 1941, through December 31, 1946, extended to July 25,1947 where continuous with active duty on or before December 31, 1946.

Korean Conflict

June 27, 1950, through January 31, 1955

Vietnam Era

August 5, 1964, through May 7, 1975 However, February 28, 1961, through May 7, 1975, for a veteran who served in the Republic of Vietnam.

Concerns

Paperwork takes 3 to 5 months to process, so you must submit the application correctly the first time. All payments are retroactive to the first month of submission of an application.

Gifting or transferring funds can prevent an individual from qualifying for other future benefits. You need someone qualified to advice concerning all gifts or transfers.

  • Home, automobile, and personal property are exempt.
  • Must need help with basic activities of living; such as bathing, grooming, eating, or be substantially confined to one's residence.
  • The Veteran does not have to be financially destitute to be able to qualify.
  • Divorce terminates eligibility for a spouse.
